How to File GSTR-3B Online: Step-by-Step Guide

GSTR-3B is where your GST liability actually gets paid. Every registered business, big or small, needs to get this return right every single period. This guide walks through filing GSTR-3B on the GST portal, how tax liability and input tax credit are calculated, QRMP filing, and the most common errors taxpayers run into.

What Is GSTR-3B?

GSTR-3B is a monthly or quarterly summary return filed by every regular GST-registered taxpayer. In this return, you declare your outward supplies (sales), inward supplies liable to reverse charge, the input tax credit you are claiming, and your final tax liability, and then you pay the net GST due. Unlike GSTR-1, which reports invoice-level sales data, GSTR-3B is a consolidated summary used mainly to calculate and pay your tax.

Who Needs to File GSTR-3B?

Every regular taxpayer must file GSTR-3B for every period, even if there were no transactions.

Monthly GSTR-3B Filers

Taxpayers with aggregate turnover above ₹5 crore, and smaller taxpayers who have not opted for the QRMP scheme, file GSTR-3B every month.

Quarterly GSTR-3B Filers Under QRMP

Taxpayers with turnover up to ₹5 crore can opt for the QRMP scheme and file one GSTR-3B per quarter instead of monthly, while still paying tax every month through PMT-06. For exact due dates under both the monthly and QRMP schedules, see our separate GST return due dates guide.

Taxpayers Exempt From Filing GSTR-3B

Composition scheme taxpayers, input service distributors, and non-resident taxable persons do not file GSTR-3B. They file their own applicable returns, such as CMP-08 and GSTR-4, GSTR-6, or GSTR-5 instead.

See our guide to GST return types to understand the forms applicable to different taxpayer categories.

Difference Between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B

These two returns work together but serve different purposes, and small business owners often confuse one for the other.

What GSTR-1 Reports

GSTR-1 reports your outward supplies in detail, invoice by invoice for B2B sales and in summary form for most B2C sales, along with credit notes, debit notes, and exports for the period.

What GSTR-3B Reports

GSTR-3B is a summary return where you declare total outward tax liability, reverse charge liability, input tax credit, and the net tax payable, and then make the actual GST payment for the period.

Why Both Returns Are Important

GSTR-1 decides what your buyers can claim as input tax credit, while GSTR-3B decides how much tax you actually pay. Since July 2025, the outward supply figures in GSTR-3B are auto-populated directly from GSTR-1 and locked for editing, which makes accurate GSTR-1 filing even more important than before, since mistakes can no longer be casually fixed at the GSTR-3B stage.

For a detailed comparison of their purpose, filing order and compliance impact, read our GSTR-1 vs GSTR-3B guide.

Prerequisites Before Filing GSTR-3B Online

A few things should be ready before you start filing.

Active GSTIN and GST Portal Login

Keep your GST portal username, password, and, if applicable, your Digital Signature Certificate ready before you begin.

Filed or Prepared GSTR-1 Data

GSTR-3B works best when your GSTR-1 for the same period has already been filed, since your outward tax liability largely auto-populates from it. If you have not filed GSTR-1 yet, that data will be missing.

Purchase Register and Eligible ITC Details

Have your purchase register ready and compare it against GSTR-2B, the auto-generated statement of input tax credit available to you, so you claim only eligible and matched credit.

Tax Liability Calculation and Payment Readiness

Work out roughly how much net tax you expect to pay after adjusting input tax credit, and make sure funds are available in your bank account to add to your electronic cash ledger if needed.

How to File GSTR-3B Online: Step-by-Step Process

Here is the full sequence for filing GSTR-3B on the GST portal.

Step 1: Log in to the GST Portal

Go to www.gst.gov.in and log in using your username, password, and the captcha shown.

Step 2: Go to Services → Returns → Returns Dashboard

From the top menu, click Services, then Returns, then Returns Dashboard, to reach the return selection page.

Step 3: Select Financial Year, Return Period and GSTR-3B

Choose the relevant financial year and period, click Search, and select GSTR-3B from the list of returns for that period.

Step 4: Enter Outward and Inward Taxable Supplies

Open Table 3.1, which shows your outward supplies and tax liability, mostly auto-populated from your filed GSTR-1. Review Table 3.2 for interstate supplies to unregistered persons, composition taxpayers, and UIN holders. Both tables are now locked for direct editing, so verify the figures match your actual sales before moving ahead.

Step 5: Add Eligible Input Tax Credit

In Table 4, review the ITC auto-populated from GSTR-2B, and enter the ITC you are eligible to claim against your purchases for the period, along with any reversals required.

Step 6: Review Tax Liability and ITC Utilisation

The portal calculates your net tax liability after adjusting available ITC, following the prescribed order of utilisation under Rule 88A. Review this calculation in Table 6.1 before proceeding.

Step 7: Pay Tax Using Electronic Cash or Credit Ledger

If your ITC balance is not enough to cover the full liability, the shortfall must be paid in cash. Create a challan and add funds to your electronic cash ledger if your current balance is insufficient.

Step 8: Verify the Summary and Submit GSTR-3B

Generate and download the summary, check every figure against your records, tick the declaration, and click Submit. This locks the return ahead of final filing.

Step 9: File With EVC or DSC

Complete the filing using an Electronic Verification Code sent to your registered mobile and email, or a Digital Signature Certificate where mandatory, such as for companies and LLPs.

Step 10: Download GSTR-3B Acknowledgement

Once filed, download the acknowledgement and payment receipt for your records. This confirms your GSTR-3B for the period has been successfully filed.

You can also check your GST return filing status for the relevant tax period.

GSTR-3B Sections Explained

A quick walkthrough of what each major section of GSTR-3B actually means for a small business.

Outward Taxable Supplies and Tax Liability

Table 3.1 shows the total value of your sales and the GST charged on them, broken down by supply type. Since this now comes from your filed GSTR-1, any error here should be fixed in GSTR-1 or GSTR-1A, not inside GSTR-3B directly.

Inward Supplies Liable to Reverse Charge

If you received goods or services where you, as the buyer, are liable to pay GST instead of the supplier (reverse charge), that liability is declared and paid here, and the related ITC, if eligible, is claimed in Table 4.

ITC Available, ITC Reversed and Ineligible ITC

Table 4 separates the ITC you are eligible to claim from ITC that must be reversed, such as credit on blocked items or purchases used for exempt supplies, and any ineligible ITC that cannot be claimed at all.

Exempt, Nil-Rated and Non-GST Inward Supplies

Table 5 captures purchases that are exempt, nil-rated, or outside the scope of GST. This is for information purposes and does not directly affect your tax payment.

Payment of Tax and Ledger Utilisation

Table 6.1 shows exactly how your tax liability is settled, how much comes from input tax credit, and how much is paid in cash, giving you a clear final picture of your GST payment for the period.

How to Calculate GST Liability in GSTR-3B

The underlying calculation is simple once you break it into steps.

Add Output GST on Sales and Advances

Start with the total GST charged on your sales for the period, plus GST applicable on any advances received that are liable to tax at the time of receipt.

Add Tax Payable Under Reverse Charge

Add any GST you owe as a buyer under reverse charge for specified goods or services received during the period.

Deduct Eligible Input Tax Credit

Subtract the input tax credit you are eligible to claim, as matched against GSTR-2B, from your total output tax liability.

Check Cash and Credit Ledger Balance

Check your electronic credit ledger balance (unused ITC from earlier periods) and electronic cash ledger balance (money already deposited) to see how much of the net liability is already covered.

Pay the Remaining Tax Liability

For example, if your output GST for the month is ₹50,000 and your eligible ITC is ₹35,000, your net GST payable is ₹15,000. If your cash ledger does not already have this amount, you pay the balance through a challan before filing.

How to Pay GST While Filing GSTR-3B

Payment during GSTR-3B filing happens through a combination of credit and cash.

Using Electronic Credit Ledger

Your available input tax credit sits in the electronic credit ledger and is automatically adjusted against your tax liability first, following the prescribed utilisation order between IGST, CGST, and SGST credit.

Using Electronic Cash Ledger

Any liability left after ITC adjustment must be paid from your electronic cash ledger, which holds funds you have deposited through a challan.

Creating a Challan for Additional Payment

If your cash ledger balance is insufficient, generate a challan from the Create Challan option on the portal, choose a payment mode such as net banking or NEFT/RTGS, and complete the payment before returning to file your return.

Checking Payment Status After Filing

After payment, check the Electronic Cash Ledger and Electronic Liability Register under Services to confirm the payment has been correctly reflected before you consider the filing complete.

How to File GSTR-3B for QRMP Taxpayers

QRMP taxpayers follow a slightly different rhythm for tax payment and return filing.

Quarterly GSTR-3B Filing Process

QRMP taxpayers file one consolidated GSTR-3B covering all three months of the quarter, using the same tables and process described above, after the quarter ends.

PMT-06 Payment for the First Two Months

For the first two months of each quarter, QRMP taxpayers pay their estimated tax liability using Form PMT-06, without filing a full return for those months.

Final GSTR-3B Filing for the Quarter

In the third month, the taxpayer files the quarterly GSTR-3B covering the full quarter's outward supplies, ITC, and tax liability, and pays any balance tax due for the quarter.

Adjusting PMT-06 Payments in Quarterly Return

The tax already paid through PMT-06 in the first two months is automatically adjusted against the total liability calculated in the quarterly GSTR-3B, so you only pay the remaining balance, if any, at the time of final filing.

How to Revise GSTR-3B After Filing

Like GSTR-1, GSTR-3B cannot be revised once it is filed.

Can GSTR-3B Be Revised?

No. Once filed, a GSTR-3B for a period is final and cannot be edited or re-filed. Any error discovered later must be corrected in a subsequent period's return or through the applicable separate form.

How to Correct Errors in the Next GSTR-3B

Most errors, such as a missed purchase or wrongly claimed ITC, are corrected by adjusting the figures in the next period's GSTR-3B rather than reopening the filed return.

Reporting Short-Paid or Excess-Paid Tax

If you discover that you paid less tax than you should have in an earlier period, report and pay the shortfall, along with applicable interest, in a later period or through a voluntary payment. If you paid more tax than required, the excess can generally be adjusted against future liability or claimed as a refund, depending on the situation.

When to Use DRC-03 for Voluntary Payment

Form DRC-03 is used to make a voluntary payment of tax, interest, or penalty outside the regular return filing process, typically when you discover a past shortfall during self-review, audit, or in response to a departmental query.

Common GSTR-3B Filing Errors and Solutions

GSTR-3B Not Reflecting After Filing

Problem: Your filed GSTR-3B does not show as filed on the dashboard right away. Reason: The portal can take a short while to update the status after payment and submission. Fix: Wait a few hours and refresh the Returns Dashboard before raising a grievance.

ITC Not Matching With GSTR-2B

Problem: The ITC you want to claim is higher than what shows in GSTR-2B. Reason: A supplier has not yet filed their GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B for that invoice. Fix: Claim ITC strictly as per GSTR-2B, follow up with the supplier for pending filings, and claim the remaining credit once it appears in a later GSTR-2B.

Wrong Tax Liability or Missing Sales

Problem: Table 3.1 does not match your actual sales for the period. Reason: GSTR-1 for the period was filed incorrectly or incompletely. Fix: Correct the underlying data through GSTR-1A for the same period, which updates the auto-populated figures in GSTR-3B before you file.

Insufficient Cash or Credit Ledger Balance

Problem: You cannot file because the cash ledger balance is not enough to cover the net liability. Reason: Tax has not been deposited yet for the shortfall amount. Fix: Create a challan, complete the payment, and allow a few minutes for the cash ledger to update before trying to file again.

Payment Failed But Return Not Filed

Problem: A bank payment failed or got stuck mid-transaction. Reason: A network issue or a failed bank gateway response. Fix: Check the Electronic Cash Ledger to confirm whether the amount was actually credited; if not, retry the challan payment rather than attempting the same transaction twice without checking.

Late Filing and Interest on Delayed Payment

Problem: The due date has passed and the return is still unfiled. Reason: Pending tax payment or incomplete data. Fix: File as soon as possible; a late fee applies per day of delay, and interest at 18% per annum applies on unpaid tax from the due date until payment, so delaying further only increases the cost.

FAQs on Filing GSTR-3B Online

Can I file GSTR-3B without filing GSTR-1?

It is technically possible in some cases, but not advisable, since Table 3.1 of GSTR-3B is auto-populated from your filed GSTR-1. Filing GSTR-1 first ensures your liability figures are accurate.

Is GSTR-3B mandatory if there are no sales?

Yes. A nil GSTR-3B must still be filed for every period, even with no sales or purchases, to remain compliant.

Can I file GSTR-3B after the due date?

Yes, but late filing attracts a late fee per day of delay and interest on any unpaid tax from the due date until the date of payment.

Can I revise GSTR-3B after filing?

No. GSTR-3B cannot be revised once filed. Corrections are made in a later period's return, or through a voluntary payment using Form DRC-03 where applicable.

How do I pay GST through GSTR-3B?

Tax is first adjusted against your available input tax credit, and any remaining balance is paid in cash through a challan added to your electronic cash ledger before you submit and file the return.

What happens if I file GSTR-3B late?

You incur a late fee for every day of delay, interest at 18% per annum on unpaid tax, and repeated delays can also affect your compliance rating and your buyers' ability to claim input tax credit on time.
