What Is a GST ARN Number?

The moment you submit a GST registration (or amendment, cancellation, or refund) application on the GST portal, the system instantly generates a unique 15-character alphanumeric code called the Application Reference Number (ARN). Think of it as your official receipt - proof that your application has been filed and is now in the system.

Your ARN is sent to your registered email and mobile number within minutes of submission. Until your GSTIN is actually issued, this ARN acts as your temporary reference for the application and can be used to demonstrate that GST registration is in progress.

Understanding the ARN Format

Every GST ARN follows a fixed 15-character structure:

  • First 2 characters: letters indicating the application type (e.g., "AA" for new registration)
  • Next 2 digits: state code of the applicant
  • Next 4 digits: month and year of application
  • Remaining 7 characters: a unique application sequence with a check digit

Because of this format, no two ARNs are ever the same, and each one can be tracked independently on the GST portal.

How to Check GST ARN Status - Step by Step

Three ways to track your application, from fastest to most comprehensive.

1

LegalDev India Free ARN Status Tool (Fastest, No Login)

Go to the ARN status box on this page, enter your complete 15-character ARN exactly as received (no spaces), and click Check Status. Your current application status appears instantly on screen. The tool works on mobile and desktop, any time of day, and doesn't ask you to log in or solve a captcha.

2

Official GST Portal (gst.gov.in)

Visit the official GST portal, click Services → Registration → Track Application Status, select "Registration" from the Module dropdown, enter your ARN number, fill in the captcha shown, and click Search to view your status.

3

Post-Login Tracking (Best for Multiple Applications)

If you're a business owner managing more than one GSTIN, or a tax professional tracking applications for several clients, log in to the GST portal and go to Services → Track Application Status. From here you can search by ARN, SRN, or submission date, and view registration, amendment, cancellation, and refund applications all in one place.

GST ARN Status Types Explained

What each status means and what action, if any, you need to take.

Detailed meanings and required actions for different GST ARN status types
ARN Status What It Means What You Should Do
Pending for Processing Application received, waiting for officer review No action - just wait
Pending for Clarification Officer has raised a query; reply needed within 7 working days Log in and respond immediately
Clarification Filed – Pending for Order Your reply is submitted; officer is reviewing Wait for the final order
Clarification Not Filed – Pending for Order Deadline to respond has passed Contact the GST helpdesk urgently
Site Verification Assigned An officer will physically verify your business premises Keep documents and premises ready
Site Verification Completed Inspection report submitted; awaiting officer's decision No action needed
Approved GSTIN has been issued Download your certificate from the portal
Rejected Application has been denied File a fresh application with corrections
Withdrawn You voluntarily withdrew the application Re-apply if registration is still needed

Pending for Processing

This is the first status you'll see after submitting your application. It simply means your form is in the queue awaiting officer review - nothing more. For applications where Aadhaar authentication was successfully completed, this stage typically clears within 3–7 working days. If it stays unchanged beyond 10 working days, it's reasonable to follow up with the helpdesk.

Pending for Clarification - Act Fast

The officer has spotted something that needs to be explained or corrected. You get exactly 7 working days to respond - starting from the date the notice was issued, not from when you happen to read it. To respond: log in → Services → Registration → Application for Filing Clarifications → open the query, upload documents, submit. Missing this window very often leads straight to rejection.

Clarification Filed / Not Filed

"Clarification Filed" means the officer is reviewing your response, usually resolved within 7 working days. "Clarification Not Filed – Pending for Order" means the 7-day window passed without a response - this almost always leads to rejection, so contact the GST helpdesk or a tax professional right away.

Site Verification

Sometimes the officer wants physical confirmation that your business operates from the declared address. When "Assigned," make sure your premises, signage, and documents match what you declared. Once "Completed," the inspector's report has gone back to the officer for a final call - no action needed from you.

Approved

Your GSTIN has been issued. Your GST Registration Certificate (Form REG-06) is available under Services → User Services → View/Download Certificates. From here, your ARN is effectively replaced by your permanent GSTIN, which you'll use on all invoices and returns going forward.

Rejected / Withdrawn

Rejected means the officer has denied the application - usually due to document issues, an unaddressed clarification notice, or an address mismatch; correct the reason and file fresh. Withdrawn means you pulled the application before any order - no penalty, and you can file a new application whenever you're ready.

ARN Status for Different Application Types

The ARN system isn't limited to new registrations - it applies to several types of GST filings:

  • New Registration ARN - generated when a business applies for GST registration for the first time
  • Amendment ARN - generated when core details like legal name, business address, or partners/directors are changed
  • Cancellation ARN - generated when a business voluntarily applies to cancel its GST registration
  • Refund ARN - generated when a taxpayer files for a GST refund (excess tax paid, inverted duty structure, zero-rated supply ITC, etc.)

GST ARN Status Timeline

How long each stage typically takes.

ARN generation: Immediate, within 15 minutes of submission
Pending for Processing (with Aadhaar auth): 3–7 working days
Pending for Processing (without Aadhaar auth): up to 30 working days
Reply deadline for Pending for Clarification: 7 working days - non-negotiable
Clarification Filed to final order: around 7 working days
Site verification (assigned to completed): 15–30 working days
Approved to GSTIN visible on portal: same day, or within 24 hours
End-to-end (no complications): 7–15 working days
End-to-end (with site verification): 30–60 working days

If your status has been stuck well beyond these windows, that's your signal to escalate rather than keep waiting.

Common Issues While Checking GST ARN Status

ARN not received: Check your spam folder first. If it's still missing after an hour, log in to the GST portal and check under My Saved Applications / My Applications - your ARN will be listed there.
Status shows "Invalid" or "Not Found": The ARN is case-sensitive and must be entered exactly as issued, in capital letters, without spaces or dashes. If generated very recently, there can be a short sync delay - try again after an hour.
Status hasn't changed for many days: Can mean your application is with a high-volume jurisdiction, or a portal sync issue. Beyond 10 working days with no movement, call the GST helpdesk at 1800-103-4786 or email helpdesk@gst.gov.in with your ARN.
ARN has expired: If 90 days have passed with no final order, don't simply re-apply - check with the helpdesk first, since a duplicate application can complicate things further.

Who Uses GST ARN Tracking?

  • Small businesses and MSMEs: Often filing without a dedicated finance team, and usually checking status from a phone. This tool works exactly the same way regardless of business size - enter the ARN, get the status.
  • Chartered Accountants and consultants: Managing several client applications at once, where quick status checks across multiple ARNs save real time.
  • Migrated (enrolled) taxpayers: Those who moved from the pre-GST regime also received an ARN during enrollment, which can be tracked the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter your 15-character ARN in the box on this page and click Check Status. You'll see the current status instantly - no account, password, or captcha needed.

The officer needs more information or documents from you before deciding on your application. You have 7 working days to respond on the GST portal - missing this deadline significantly increases the chance of rejection.

Yes, for up to 90 days from generation, your ARN can serve as temporary proof that registration is in progress. Once approved, you should switch to using your GSTIN on all documents.

You can't appeal a rejection directly on the portal. Review the rejection order, fix the issues mentioned, and file a fresh application. Getting expert review before re-submitting reduces the risk of a second rejection.
