PAN to GST Verification Tool: Check GST Number by PAN Online
LegalDev India Tax & Compliance Desk
A PAN to GST verification tool lets you enter a 10-digit PAN and see every GSTIN registered against it across India, since a GSTIN is built directly from the PAN. The same lookup is available free on the official GST portal under Search Taxpayer → Search by PAN, and on LegalDev India's own PAN to GST tool. If no GSTIN exists for a PAN, you can start a new GST registration from the same page.
Most people trying to check a GST number by PAN make the same mistake: they guess at a GSTIN by pattern-matching the PAN into it, instead of actually searching for what's registered. A GSTIN is PAN-based, but that doesn't mean every state slot is filled. A business might hold only one GSTIN, five, or none at all, and the only way to know is to search, not calculate. This page explains what a PAN to GST verification tool actually checks, how to read the result you get back, and what to do next whether a GSTIN turns up or not.

What Is a PAN to GST Verification Tool?
It is a search utility that takes a 10-digit PAN and returns every GSTIN registered against it, because the GST system builds each GSTIN directly from the taxpayer's PAN rather than issuing an unrelated number. A GSTIN is fifteen characters in total:
| Position | What It Is |
| 1st and 2nd digits | State code |
| 3rd to 12th | The PAN itself |
| 13th | Entity code for multiple registrations in the same state |
| 14th | A fixed "Z" |
| 15th | Checksum digit |
Because the PAN sits inside the GSTIN, a tool can take that PAN and query the GST Network's records for every state where a registration actually exists, returning the legal name, status, and jurisdiction for each one it finds. The official version lives on the GST portal itself, under Search Taxpayer → Search by PAN. LegalDev India's PAN to GST tool runs the same kind of lookup with a simpler interface for anyone who'd rather not navigate the government portal directly.
Why Verify a GST Number Using PAN?
You verify a GST number by PAN to confirm a business is actually registered, under the name it claims, before you rely on an invoice it issued or onboard it as a vendor. This matters most for input tax credit: if you claim ITC on an invoice from a GSTIN that turns out to be cancelled, suspended, or never properly matched to the supplier's PAN, that credit can be challenged later. The few seconds a PAN search takes are considerably cheaper than the alternative.
Identity misuse: It also catches the kind of identity misuse that has become a recognised problem in India's GST system. CBIC's own 2023 special drive against fake registrations cancelled or suspended tens of thousands of fraudulent GSTINs nationwide, a share of them built on someone else's PAN without their knowledge. Searching your own PAN periodically is a reasonable way to catch that early.
How to Verify GST Number by PAN: Step-by-Step
Four steps, a few seconds each:
1
Enter the 10-Digit PAN
Type the PAN exactly as printed, in the standard PAN format (for example, ABCDE1234F). Even one wrong character returns no match rather than a partial one.
2
Complete the Captcha Verification
Solve the security code shown. It exists to stop automated scraping of the GST database rather than to slow down a genuine search.
3
Click Search to Fetch GSTIN Details
The tool queries the GST records tied to that PAN and returns whatever is actually registered: one GSTIN, several across different states, or none.
4
Review the GSTIN Results Linked to the PAN
Check the legal name, registration status, and state against what you expected before treating the result as confirmation of anything. A name mismatch or an unexpected extra state is exactly what this search is meant to surface.
What Details You Can Verify With PAN to GST Search
For each GSTIN found, you can check:
Legal Name and Trade Name
The registered legal name tied to the PAN, and the trade or brand name the business operates under if it differs. Useful for confirming an invoice's issuer actually matches the entity you're dealing with.
GSTIN Number and Registration Status
The full 15-digit GSTIN for each state registration, along with whether it's currently active, cancelled, or suspended.
State and Jurisdiction
Which state or union territory each GSTIN belongs to, and the tax jurisdiction it falls under. Relevant for working out whether a transaction is intra-state or inter-state for GST purposes.
Date of Registration and Constitution
When the registration took effect, and the legal structure of the entity: proprietorship, partnership, LLP, company, or another category.
Taxpayer Type and Nature of Business
Whether the taxpayer is registered under the regular scheme or the composition scheme, and the broad category of business activity declared at registration.
Understanding Your PAN to GST Search Results
Four outcomes are possible:
Result 1: One GSTIN Found
The most common outcome for a small or single-state business: one GSTIN, one state, and the registration details above all attached to it.
Result 2: Multiple GSTINs Across States
Normal for any business with a physical presence or supply obligation in more than one state, since GST registration is state-specific and one PAN commonly carries a separate GSTIN for each state where the business operates.
Result 3: No GSTIN Found
No GST registration currently exists against that PAN: either the business genuinely hasn't crossed the registration threshold yet, or it should have registered and hasn't. If this is your own PAN and you expected a result, check your registration status directly, and don't assume the search failed.
Result 4: Cancelled or Suspended Status
The registration existed but is no longer active: cancelled on the taxpayer's own request, for non-filing, or by the department during an enforcement drive. An invoice from a cancelled or suspended GSTIN is a clear reason to pause before claiming input tax credit against it.
Who Should Use a PAN to GST Verification Tool?
Anyone who relies on someone else's GST registration, or wants to protect their own:
Businesses Verifying Vendor GST Details
Confirming a supplier's GSTIN is active and matches the name on their invoice before you process payment or claim input tax credit against it.
E-commerce Sellers Onboarding Suppliers
Checking a new seller's registration status across every state they claim to operate in, before listing their goods or extending credit terms.
Accountants and Tax Professionals
Verifying client and vendor GSTINs as a routine part of return preparation and reconciliation, particularly before filing anything that depends on a counterparty's registration being genuine.
Buyers Checking Seller GSTIN
Confirming a seller is actually registered before a large purchase, especially where the GST charged on the invoice is significant enough to matter if the registration later turns out to be invalid.
Businesses Checking Their Own Registration
Confirming your own registration is active, correctly listed, and not duplicated or misused under your PAN by someone else.
PAN to GST Verification vs GSTIN Search: What's the Difference?
PAN to GST Search
Starts from the PAN and returns every GSTIN tied to it. The right tool when you know a business's PAN but not its specific GST number, or you want to see all its state registrations at once.
GSTIN Search
Starts from a specific 15-digit GSTIN and confirms that one registration's details: legal name, status, and filing pattern. The right tool when you already have a GSTIN, say from an invoice, and just need to confirm it's genuine.
The two aren't competing tools; they answer different starting questions.
Common Errors While Searching GST by PAN
Most "failed" searches come down to one of these:
Incorrect or incomplete PAN entry. A single mistyped character returns no result rather than a close match, since PAN is treated as an exact-match field.
Captcha mismatch. An expired or misread captcha blocks the search entirely. Refreshing the code and re-entering it resolves this in almost every case.
PAN not linked to any GST registration. A genuine "no records found" result, not a tool malfunction. No GSTIN currently exists against that PAN.
Multiple GSTINs causing confusion. Several GSTINs for one PAN can look like an error, but it almost always reflects registrations in more than one state, which is entirely normal under GST's state-specific model.
Is PAN to GST Verification Safe and Private?
Yes. A PAN to GST search only returns information that's already public on the GST portal's own Search Taxpayer service, which anyone can query without logging in. The search itself doesn't require you to create an account, and a tool that genuinely doesn't store the PAN you entered isn't retaining anything sensitive beyond the length of that one query. That said, confirm any third-party tool's data-handling practice before relying on it for repeated searches at scale.
What to Do After Verifying a GST Number
Verify details before onboarding a vendor. Cross-check the legal name, status, and state against the vendor's own paperwork before finalising a contract or payment terms.
Cross-check the invoice GSTIN. Match the GSTIN printed on an invoice against what the search returns for that PAN. A mismatch is one of the simplest ways to catch an invoice from an entity that isn't who it claims to be.
Apply for registration if none exists. If your own PAN shows no registration and your turnover has crossed, or will soon cross, the threshold, start the process rather than waiting. Our GST Registration service handles the application end to end.
GST Registration Threshold Limits by Category
Registration becomes mandatory once your aggregate turnover crosses these limits in a financial year, under Notification No. 10/2019-Central Tax (effective 1 April 2019):
| Category of Supply | Normal Category States | Special Category States (Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura) |
| Exclusive supply of goods | ₹40 lakh | ₹20 lakh |
| Supply of services, or goods plus services | ₹20 lakh | ₹10 lakh |
These thresholds don't apply to everyone. Inter-state supply of goods, e-commerce sellers, casual taxable persons, and a few other categories under Section 24 of the CGST Act must register regardless of turnover, from the first rupee of business.

PAN to GST Verification Tool: FAQs
Got questions? Find clear answers from our tax and compliance desk:
It's the process of searching the GST system by a 10-digit PAN to find every GSTIN registered against it, using the fact that a GSTIN is built from the PAN itself.
Use the official GST portal's Search Taxpayer → Search by PAN page, or a tool like LegalDev India's PAN to GST search, enter the PAN and the captcha, and review the GSTINs returned.
A PAN to GST search returns every active, cancelled, or suspended GSTIN registered against that PAN across all states where a registration exists.
Enter the PAN into the search field, complete the captcha, and the result shows the legal name, GSTIN, state, status, and registration date for each match.
Run the PAN through the search. A result means it's registered somewhere, and "No records found" means it currently isn't.
Yes. Both the official GST portal's search and LegalDev India's PAN to GST tool are free to use, with no login required.
There's no fixed cap tied to the search itself. A PAN can carry one GSTIN per state it operates in, and even more than one within the same state for distinct business verticals under the applicable GST registration rules.
Yes. A single PAN search returns results from every state where that PAN holds a registration, not just one state at a time.
Search the PAN and check whether the GSTIN you have matches one of the results returned, or search the GSTIN directly and confirm the PAN embedded in its middle ten digits.
Legal name, trade name, GSTIN, registration status, state and jurisdiction, date of registration, business constitution, and taxpayer type.
Yes, if that PAN has a GST registration. The search returns the legal name (and trade name, if different) tied to each GSTIN found.
It means no GST registration currently exists against that PAN, not that the search failed. The business may genuinely be below the threshold, or simply not yet registered.
Search your own PAN periodically. Any GSTIN you don't recognise, in a state you don't operate in, is worth investigating immediately.
Use the GST portal's built-in reporting option on the same Search by PAN page to flag the registration to the jurisdictional officer, and keep a record of the complaint reference.
On the GST portal, search your PAN, select the unrecognised GSTIN from the results, and use the "Report" option, which the GSTN's own documentation confirms routes the complaint to a dedicated PAN Vigilance Officer at the relevant jurisdictional office for inquiry and possible cancellation.
Yes. The official GST portal's PAN search is a public lookup and doesn't restrict searches to your own PAN, which is exactly what makes it useful for vendor verification.
Yes, under Services → User Services → Search Taxpayer → Search by PAN on www.gst.gov.in, free and without login.
PAN to GST search starts from a PAN and finds all linked GSTINs. GSTIN verification starts from one specific GSTIN and confirms that single registration's details.
