Udyam Verification: Verify Udyam Registration Number and MSME Certificate Online
By the LegalDev India Business Compliance Team
Udyam verification means checking a Udyam Registration Number, or the QR code on a Udyam certificate, against the Government of India's Udyam portal at udyamregistration.gov.in. Enter the number and the on-screen code under Print/Verify, then compare the enterprise name, category and registration date with the certificate you were given.
A supplier has sent you a PDF that says "MSME". Before you extend credit, sign a contract or tag that vendor as Micro or Small in your books, you want to know whether the number on that PDF exists on the government's register. This page shows you how to find out in a couple of minutes, what each result means, and what to do when the check does not work.
What Is Udyam Verification?
Udyam verification confirms that a Udyam Registration Number exists on the Ministry of MSME's register and that the details attached to it match what the enterprise has told you. Udyam registration replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar system on 1 July 2020 (Ministry of MSME/PIB, June 2021). Each registered business gets a permanent number and a computer-generated e-certificate. Verification is how you close the gap between "I have a certificate" and "the government has a record".
The number follows a fixed pattern: UDYAM-XX-00-0000000. That is the word UDYAM, a two-letter state code, a two-digit district code and a seven-digit serial. Count it and you get 16 characters, or 19 with the three hyphens. Many guides call it a "19-digit number". It is not. Knowing this saves time when someone sends you a number that is "one digit short".
Why Is Udyam Verification Important?
A certificate is a PDF, and PDFs can be edited. The portal record cannot be edited by your supplier, which makes it the only version worth trusting.
For buyers the stakes are tax and cash. Under Section 43B(h) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, an amount owed to a micro or small enterprise that stays unpaid beyond the Section 15 limit of the MSMED Act, 2006 is deductible only in the year you actually pay it. From 1 April 2026 the matching provision is Section 37(2)(g) of the Income-tax Act, 2025; FY 2025-26 is still governed by the 1961 Act. The Finance Ministry restated this link in a Parliament reply dated 21 July 2026. Medium enterprises are outside the clause, so the Micro/Small label on a supplier's record changes how you book their invoices.
Who Should Verify a Udyam Registration?
Buyers and accounts-payable teams deciding which vendors fall under the 15/45-day payment rule
Lenders and NBFC credit teams checking enterprise category before sanctioning an MSME facility
Tender and procurement officers confirming bidders who claim MSME preference
Marketplaces and onboarding teams screening seller documents
MSME owners themselves, to see how their own record reads after the April 2025 classification change
How to Verify Udyam Registration Number Online
Open the official Udyam portal, choose Print/Verify, select "Verify Udyam Registration", type the number and the on-screen code, and press Verify. The details of the enterprise appear on the screen. No login, Aadhaar or OTP is needed for this step, according to 2026 guides covering the portal.
Step 1: Visit the Official Udyam Registration Portal
Type https://udyamregistration.gov.in into your browser yourself, or open it from a bookmark. Do not use a search ad or a link in a message. Many private sites sell "Udyam services" and look official; only addresses ending in gov.in are government sites.
Step 2: Open the Verification Page
From the top menu choose Print/Verify, then Verify Udyam Registration. The portal also hosts the page directly at udyamregistration.gov.in/verifyudyambarcode.aspx. Menu labels can change, so if you do not see them, look for the word "Verify" in that menu.
Step 3: Enter the Udyam Registration Number
Copy the number exactly as printed, hyphens included. The portal looks up records by number only. As of 2026 it has no search by business name, so a supplier who says "just search our company" is not giving you a usable lookup. If a supplier has lost the number, they can recover it through the portal's "Forgot Udyam/UAM No." option.
Step 4: Complete the Captcha and Verify
Type the verification code shown in the image and click Verify. If the code is hard to read, refresh it. Letters are case-sensitive on many captcha images, so copy what you see.
Step 5: Check the Enterprise Details
Do not stop at "a record came up". Compare the name, category and dates on screen with the certificate in your hand. A real number attached to someone else's business is a common trick, and only a side-by-side comparison catches it. The table in the details section below tells you what to look for.
How to Verify Udyam Certificate Using QR Code
Scan the QR code on the Udyam certificate with your phone camera and it opens that enterprise's page on the portal. The Udyam certificate carries a dynamic QR code, which means it points to the live record rather than storing a frozen copy of the details. Because of that, an old PDF cannot hide a later change in category.
Where to Find the QR Code on the Certificate
The QR code is printed on the e-certificate the portal generates under Print Udyam Certificate. The certificate is computer-generated and needs no signature or stamp. If the code is missing, cropped out or blurred, ask the enterprise to download a fresh copy rather than sending a screenshot or a scan of a printout. Without a usable QR, fall back to verification by number.
How to Scan and Verify the QR Code
1Hold your phone's camera over the code.
2Read the web address that pops up before you tap it. The domain should be udyamregistration.gov.in.
3Open the page and check that it asks only for what the official verify page asks: nothing about OTPs, Aadhaar or payments.
4Compare the result with the printed certificate.
The address check in step 2 is our own safeguard, not an official rule: a forged certificate can carry a real-looking QR that leads to a copycat site.
What Details Are Shown After Scanning
The page shows the enterprise's name, organisation type, major activity (manufacturing or services), official address, plant or unit details, the date of Udyam registration and the classification by year. If the page shows a different name or number than the certificate in your hand, stop and treat the certificate as unverified.
Details You Can Verify Through Udyam Verification
Five fields do the real work. Use this table as a checklist while you compare the portal with the certificate.
| Field | Compare It With | Red Flag |
| Enterprise name and type | Invoice, PAN name, contract | Trade name on the certificate, different legal entity on the invoice |
| Udyam number | The number you typed | Last digits differ from the certificate |
| Date of registration | Invoice and order dates | Registered after the supply you are checking |
| Classification | Latest year row | Certificate says Small, portal's latest row says Medium |
| Activity and address | Invoice and GST record | Trading-only activity; address in another state |
Enterprise Name and Type
The name on the portal should match the legal entity on the invoice and bank account. A proprietorship, a partnership and a company are different legal types, and the organisation type on the record tells you which one you are dealing with. A mismatch is not proof of fraud, but it is a reason to ask questions before paying. You can cross-check the supplier's GSTIN using our GST verification tool.
Udyam Registration Number
Check the number character by character, including the state code. The state code should be consistent with where the business says it operates, though a business can register from one state and operate from another, so treat a mismatch as a prompt to ask, not an automatic fail.
Registration Date
The date matters more than most people think. A supplier that registered part-way through the year counts as a micro or small supplier for tax purposes only for transactions on or after its Udyam registration date (TaxGuru, 2026). If your invoice pre-dates the registration, the 43B(h) timing rule may not apply to that invoice.
Enterprise Classification: Micro, Small or Medium
Since 1 April 2025 the limits are (MSME notification S.O. 1364(E), 21 March 2025):
| Category | Investment Up To | Turnover Up To |
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
Worked example: a firm has invested ₹2 crore in plant and machinery and turned over ₹12 crore. Its investment fits Micro. Its turnover does not. Both limits have to be met, so it is classified as Small, not Micro. The portal record shows classification by year, so look at the latest row.
Business Activity and Address
Check whether the major activity is manufacturing or services, and compare the address to the invoice. A Ministry of MSME office memorandum, as summarised by tax practitioners, says enterprises engaged purely in trading are registered on Udyam only for limited purposes such as priority-sector lending, and the Section 15 payment protection generally does not extend to them. If your vendor is a pure trader, ask your CA how to treat their invoices.
Udyam Verification Failed: Common Reasons and Fixes
A failed check is usually a typing or document problem, not fraud. Work through the four causes below in order. If all four are ruled out and the portal still shows nothing, treat the certificate as unverified.
Invalid Udyam registration number
Common causes: a letter O typed instead of a zero, a missing hyphen, a 12-character old Udyog Aadhaar number (it looks different), or a pasted number with a trailing space. Retype the number from the certificate. If the number starts with UDYAM-I-, it may be a certificate issued under the Udyam Assist Platform for informal micro enterprises, which is verified on a separate site.
Invalid or damaged QR code
A screenshot, a low-resolution fax or a cropped PDF can break a QR code. Ask for a fresh download from the portal. If the QR opens a site that is not udyamregistration.gov.in, do not enter any details and do not trust the certificate.
Wrong captcha entry
Refresh the code and type it slowly. If it keeps failing, try another browser or turn off extensions that block scripts. The portal may reject a verification attempt after several wrong codes, so slow down rather than retry fast.
Certificate not yet updated on the portal
A very recent registration, or a recent update to the record, may take time to show up. Wait and try again later. If a supplier tells you they registered "yesterday", ask for the registration acknowledgement and re-check in a few days before treating it as an issue.
Udyam Registration vs Udyog Aadhaar
Udyam registration is the current MSME registration; Udyog Aadhaar is the old one it replaced. If someone sends you an Udyog Aadhaar certificate today, ask for the Udyam certificate instead.
Key Differences
| Point | Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) | Udyam Registration |
| Launched | September 2015 | 1 July 2020 |
| Number | 12 characters | UDYAM-XX-00-0000000 (16 characters) |
| Basis | Online memorandum filing | PAN and Aadhaar based, with GST/ITR data linked |
| Status today | Validity extended several times, then ended | The valid registration |
Can You Still Verify Udyog Aadhaar?
Not through the Udyam verify page, which works on Udyam numbers. The Ministry extended UAM validity from 31 March 2021 to 31 December 2021 (PIB, 17 June 2021) and, according to ClearTax coverage, again to 30 June 2022. After that date a UAM is not accepted as proof of MSME status.
Which One Should You Use?
Udyam. Ask every new vendor for their Udyam number, not a UAM, and verify it on the portal. Existing UAM holders migrated for free using their UAM, PAN and Aadhaar.
Benefits of Udyam Verification
A one-minute check protects you from forged paperwork, mis-booked vendors and applications that get rejected on a documents mismatch.
Avoid Fake MSME Certificates
The portal record is the source; the PDF is only a copy. Verifying by number or QR means you are never relying on a document the supplier could have edited.
Verify Suppliers and Vendors
Treat this as a six-point onboarding check:
1Get the Udyam number and e-certificate from the vendor.
2Verify on udyamregistration.gov.in by number or QR.
3Match name, type and address to the invoice and GST record.
4Note the latest classification and the date of Udyam registration.
5Record Micro, Small or Medium in your vendor master.
6Put payment terms in writing, using a vendor agreement, and keep the portal screenshot on file.
Worked example: you buy goods worth ₹4,80,000 from a vendor verified as Small, registered on 1 August 2025, and you accept the goods on 10 January 2026. With no written payment agreement, Section 15 gives you 15 days, so payment is due by 25 January 2026. With a written agreement for 45 days, the due date is 24 February 2026, and 45 days is the legal ceiling. If the amount is still unpaid on 31 March 2026, the ₹4,80,000 is added back to your FY 2025-26 income and becomes deductible in the year you actually pay it. Paying in April does not rescue the earlier year, unlike other Section 43B items. Interest under the MSMED Act is separate and is not tax-deductible (Section 23).
If you are the supplier and a buyer pays late, new delayed-payment complaints have gone to the MSME ODR portal, odr.msme.gov.in, since 15 October 2025; the older Samadhaan portal stopped taking new filings (ICAI journal, 2025).
Support Loan and Tender Applications
Banks and procurement teams check the Udyam record against your application. If your certificate shows a name, address or activity that differs from your loan form or tender documents, expect delays. Verify your own number before you apply and correct any mismatch on the portal first.
Confirm MSME Classification
Your category can change as your investment and turnover change, and the portal pulls in GST and income tax return data to update it. Verify your own record after you file returns, particularly after the April 2025 limits. If you want help correcting your record, our team can support Udyam registration and MSME registration updates, and a compliance expert can review your vendor list.
Next step: open udyamregistration.gov.in now, run the number through Print/Verify, and save the screenshot. If you need help with registration, corrections or vendor compliance, you can
speak to an expert. Registration on the official portal itself is free; our help is optional.
Frequently Asked Questions
Open udyamregistration.gov.in, go to Print/Verify, choose Verify Udyam Registration, enter the Udyam number and the on-screen code, and click Verify. Compare the details shown with the certificate.
As of 2026 the official verify page works only with the Udyam Registration Number. If a supplier cannot give you the number, they can recover it through the portal's "Forgot Udyam/UAM No." option.
It has 16 characters: UDYAM, a two-letter state code, a two-digit district code and seven digits. With the three hyphens it is 19 characters, which is why some guides call it a 19-digit number.
Scan the QR on the certificate with your phone camera, check that the web address is udyamregistration.gov.in, and compare the enterprise details on the page with the certificate.
Invalid usually means the number is mistyped or in the wrong format. Not found means the format is right but the portal returned no record. Re-enter the number carefully, then ask the supplier for a fresh certificate.
The registration is permanent and needs no renewal. The enterprise's category can change over time, so the latest classification row on the record is the one to read.
No. The Ministry extended UAM validity until 31 December 2021 and later further, but UAM is not accepted as MSME proof today. Ask for a Udyam certificate instead.
They can download it again from the portal under Print/Verify, then Print Udyam Certificate, using the Udyam number and the registered mobile number with an OTP.
