Service Overview
Getting a GSTIN isn't optional once your business crosses a certain size, and for a growing number of businesses - online sellers, freelancers taking on B2B clients, anyone supplying across state lines - it's required from day one, regardless of turnover. The registration itself is free on the government portal, but the process asks for a specific set of documents, a specific sequence of steps, and increasingly, Aadhaar-based verification that can either speed things up dramatically or slow you down if it's skipped.
This page walks through exactly what's involved: who has to register, what paperwork to keep ready, how the online process works step by step, what it costs, and how long it realistically takes in 2026. If you'd rather not handle the portal yourself, LegalDev India's team can manage the entire filing on your behalf - details further down this page.

What Is GST Registration?
GST registration is how a business formally enrols itself under India's Goods and Services Tax system. Once approved, the business is issued a GSTIN - a unique 15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number - and from that point on, it's legally allowed to charge GST on its invoices, claim credit for the GST it has already paid on its own purchases, and file the periodic returns the law requires.
GST has been in force since July 2017, when it absorbed a long list of older taxes - VAT, excise duty, service tax - into a single nationwide structure. The system itself was overhauled again in September 2025 under what's commonly called "GST 2.0," which cut the old four-rate structure down to mainly two slabs, 5% and 18%, with a separate 40% band reserved for luxury and sin goods. That reform also brought a faster registration track for smaller, lower-risk applicants, which is covered in detail in the process section below.
-
GST Registration and GSTIN - not the same thing - it's a small distinction, but worth getting right: GST registration is the application. The GSTIN is the result - the number you receive once the application is approved. You apply for registration; you're issued a GSTIN.
Who Actually Needs GST Registration?
Registration isn't automatic just because a business exists. It becomes compulsory once turnover crosses a set threshold, or once the business falls into a category the law flags as mandatory no matter how small the turnover is.
Turnover-based thresholds
Goods suppliers
₹40 lakh in most states (₹20 lakh in specified special-category states)
Service providers
₹20 lakh in most states (₹10 lakh in specified special-category states)
Special-category states - the North-Eastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and a few others - generally follow the lower thresholds, though a couple of them have opted into the higher ₹40 lakh goods limit.
Mandatory regardless of turnover, if you are:
Selling through an e-commerce marketplace, or operating one
Supplying goods or services across state borders
Registered as a casual taxable person or a non-resident taxable person
Liable to pay tax under the reverse charge mechanism
Functioning as an input service distributor
Required to deduct or collect tax at source
Supplying through an e-commerce operator, even below the turnover limit
Even outside these categories, plenty of small businesses register voluntarily - usually to claim input tax credit, get listed on marketplaces, or simply appear more credible to bigger B2B buyers who tend to prefer GST-registered vendors.
Eligibility by Business Type
The core eligibility test - turnover or mandatory category - stays the same, but the paperwork changes depending on how your business is structured.
Sole Proprietorship
Registers under the proprietor's own PAN. Usually the quickest to process, since there's no separate constitution document involved.
Partnership Firm
Requires the partnership deed, PAN of the firm, and PAN plus identity proof for each partner.
LLP
Requires the LLP's incorporation certificate, the LLP agreement, and a Digital Signature Certificate for the designated partner.
Private or Public Limited Company
Requires the certificate of incorporation, MOA and AOA, a board resolution naming the authorised signatory, and a DSC for that signatory.
HUF
Registers using the Karta's PAN and identity proof, along with the HUF's own PAN.
Trusts and Societies
Follow a similar path, substituting the entity's own registration certificate for a company incorporation certificate.
Benefits of Registering for GST
Legal standing to trade - you can raise GST-compliant invoices and operate as a recognised taxpayer
Input tax credit - GST paid on business purchases can be claimed back, subject to standard matching and compliance rules
Credibility with larger buyers - many corporate procurement teams and government tenders will only work with GST-registered vendors
Access to interstate trade and marketplaces - a GSTIN is a prerequisite for selling across state lines or listing on most e-commerce platforms
Getting ahead of the threshold - registering voluntarily before you're required to means you're not scrambling mid-year once turnover crosses the limit

The 3-Working-Day Fast Track (CGST Rule 14A)
Since 1 November 2025, a simplified route under CGST Rule 14A has let eligible small businesses get approved dramatically faster than before. If your estimated monthly B2B output tax liability - CGST, SGST/UTGST, and IGST combined - stays at or under ₹2.5 lakh, and you complete Aadhaar authentication for your primary authorised signatory and at least one promoter or partner, your GSTIN can be deemed approved within 3 working days. In practice, many applicants see it move even faster than that once verification clears.
There's a trade-off worth knowing before you opt in: you can only hold one Rule 14A registration per state or union territory under a given PAN, and if your B2B liability later crosses the ₹2.5 lakh monthly mark, you'll need to file Form GST REG-32 to withdraw from the scheme and shift to standard registration - which also requires clearing pending returns first. If you're confident your business will scale past that limit soon, it may be simpler to register under the standard route (Rule 8) from the start rather than switch later. B2C sales, by the way, don't count toward the ₹2.5 lakh limit at all - only B2B supplies do.
Documents You'll Need
Having these ready and correctly formatted before you start is the single biggest thing that speeds up approval.
PAN card of the business or the individual applicant
Aadhaar card of the proprietor, partners, or authorised signatory (required for Aadhaar authentication)
Passport-size photo of the proprietor, partners, or directors
Address proof for the place of business - electricity bill, property tax receipt, or a rent agreement plus a no-objection certificate if it's rented
Bank details - a cancelled cheque, bank statement, or the first page of the passbook
Constitution proof - partnership deed, LLP agreement, or incorporation certificate, depending on structure
Digital Signature Certificate - mandatory for companies and LLPs, optional for proprietors
Authorisation letter or board resolution naming who is filing on the company's behalf
A quick but important flag: if a document's spelling or address format doesn't line up exactly with what's on the PAN card, expect a query from the officer. Mismatches like this are the most common cause of delay.
GST Registration Fees
There's no government fee for GST registration itself - filing directly on the official portal costs nothing.
What you're paying for, if you engage a service like LegalDev India, is the professional handling of it: accurate document preparation, error-checking before submission, and follow-up if the officer raises a query. Costs vary depending on how complex the registration is - a straightforward proprietorship is naturally quicker to process than a private limited company with several directors and multiple business locations. It's worth confirming upfront whether a quoted price is genuinely all-inclusive, or whether things like document review and certificate retrieval get billed separately later.
How Long Does It Actually Take?
Most delays trace back to document mismatches, incomplete address proof, or a slow response to an officer's query - all avoidable with a clean, matching submission the first time around.
| Route |
Typical Timeline |
| Rule 14A fast-track (Aadhaar-authenticated, low B2B liability) |
3 working days, often faster |
| Standard registration with Aadhaar authentication |
Around 7 working days |
| Cases needing physical verification or extra scrutiny |
Up to 30 working days |
Your GST Registration Certificate
Once your application clears, the certificate is issued electronically as Form REG-06. It carries your GSTIN, legal and trade name, business constitution, principal place of business, the effective date of registration, and the registration type (regular, composition, casual, and so on).
To get a copy: log into the GST portal, go to Services → User Services → View/Download Certificate, and download REG-06 as a PDF. There's no physical copy posted to you - the downloaded PDF is the valid document, and it's accepted as-is by banks, vendors, and government offices.
If your address, contact details, or authorised signatory changes afterward, that has to go through a formal amendment on the portal - not just an informal update.
Checking Your Application Status
With an ARN
Go to Services → Registration → Track Application Status and enter it. Works once the application has actually been submitted.
With a TRN
If you haven't finished the application, log back in with the TRN to pick up where you left off.
Statuses you'll typically see: Pending for Processing, Pending for Clarification (meaning the officer has queried something, usually via Form REG-04), Approved, or Rejected. If you get a clarification notice, respond within the given window - usually 7 working days - or the application risks being rejected outright. A rejected application generally means starting over with a fresh filing, though it's worth understanding exactly what triggered the rejection first, so the same issue doesn't repeat.
Amending Your GST Registration
Business details change - you shift offices, bring on a new partner, update a phone number. Amendments fall into two buckets:
| Change Type |
What's Involved |
| Core field changes | Legal name, principal place of business, adding or removing partners/promoters - need officer approval, filed via Form REG-14, and can take a few days. |
| Non-core field changes | Email, mobile number, bank details, minor address edits - typically get approved automatically. |
Keeping this information accurate isn't just tidy record-keeping - mismatches here are a common trigger for queries or notices during return filing or an audit later on.
Cancelling a GST Registration
Cancellation permanently closes out a GSTIN - whether the business has shut down, been sold, or simply dropped below the threshold. It's filed via Form REG-16, and once processed, the department issues a cancellation order through Form REG-19.
This is different from suspension, which is temporary and usually triggered by unfiled returns, communicated via a notice like Form REG-17 or REG-31. A suspended GSTIN can often be reinstated by clearing the pending returns and responding to the notice; a cancelled one can't - you'd need to file fresh if you want to register again.
Even after cancellation, a final return and settlement of any outstanding tax liability is still required, so cancellation isn't the finish line on its own.
Mistakes That Commonly Delay Applications
- PAN details that don't exactly match the PAN card
- Address proof that doesn't line up with the address entered in the form
- Blurry, expired, or wrongly sized document uploads
- Bank details under a name that doesn't match the GST application
- Skipping Aadhaar authentication despite being eligible for the faster route
- Missing the deadline to respond to a REG-04 clarification notice
- Not tracking the ARN and missing an officer's query altogether
The portal now runs automated, risk-based checks on new filings, so small inconsistencies are more likely than before to trigger a query. A careful first submission genuinely pays off here.

Frequently Asked Questions
It's the process of formally enrolling a business under India's GST law so it can legally charge tax, claim input tax credit, and file returns. Approval results in a 15-digit GSTIN.
Through the official GST portal, under Services → Registration → New Registration. The process is entirely online, though companies and LLPs also need a Digital Signature Certificate.
Businesses that cross the turnover threshold (₹40 lakh for goods, ₹20 lakh for services, lower in special-category states), plus categories like e-commerce sellers, interstate suppliers, and casual taxable persons, regardless of turnover. Everyone else can register voluntarily.
PAN, Aadhaar, a passport photo, address proof, bank details, and constitution documents (partnership deed, incorporation certificate, and so on) depending on the business structure.
Nothing, if you file it yourself on the government portal. Professional assistance, if you choose to use it, is a separate charge from the service provider.
As quick as 3 working days for eligible applicants under the Rule 14A fast-track; around 7 working days for standard Aadhaar-based applications; up to 30 working days if physical verification is needed.
A 15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number issued once your application is approved. It appears on every invoice, return, and GST-related record for the business.
With your ARN, under Services → Registration → Track Application Status on the GST portal - or your TRN, if the application isn't finished yet.
Log into the GST portal and go to Services → User Services → View/Download Certificate to get Form REG-06 as a PDF.
Only once turnover crosses the applicable threshold, or if the business falls into a mandatory category like e-commerce selling or interstate supply. Below that, it's optional.
Yes - application, document upload, and Aadhaar authentication are all done through the GST portal.
You'll usually need to file a fresh application. If the rejection followed an unanswered clarification notice, it's worth understanding what was flagged before reapplying.
Conclusion
GST registration is the first compliance step nearly everything else in the GST system builds on, and getting the details right the first time - accurate documents, correct information, and Aadhaar authentication where you qualify - saves real time later. Whether you're registering voluntarily as a freelancer or because your business has just crossed the threshold, the underlying process hasn't fundamentally changed since 2017; what's different in 2026 is how fast it can move for applicants who show up prepared.
If you'd rather not deal with the portal, the document formats, and the possibility of an officer's query on your own, LegalDev India can manage the entire registration for you, from the first document checklist to a downloaded GSTIN certificate.
